Background information on ‘Silica’
Silica is divided into two main groups, crystalline silica and
amorphous silica (non-crystalline silica).

Crystalline silica is found in sand, stone, concrete and mortar. It is also used to make a variety of products including engineered stone (used to fabricate kitchen and bathroom benchtops), bricks, tiles and some plastics. When workers cut, crush, drill, polish, saw or grind products that contain crystalline silica, dust particles are generated that are small enough to lodge deep in the lungs and cause serious illness or disease including silicosis. The most common type of crystalline silica is quartz (CAS 14808-60-7).

Amorphous Silica is silicon dioxide, a naturally occurring and widely abundant mineral that forms the major component of most rocks and soils. There are non-crystalline and crystalline forms of silicon dioxide.

CIBO Solid Surface Vanities:

  • One of the standout features of CIBO Solid Surface (crystalline silica free) benchtops is their durability. The material composition makes them exceptionally strong and resistance to scratches, stains and heat. An ideal choice for high-traffic areas like bathrooms!

  • CIBO Solid Surface is relatively low maintenance unlike natural stone, which may require regular sealing and special cleaning products. We recommend regular cleaning with a damp cloth and warm water mixed with a mild detergent. For stubborn marks or scuffs, wipe away any residue and clean using a damp cloth and a small amount of a mild abrasive cream cleanser (eg Gumption®). Dry and buff with a clean dry cloth.

  • It has an improved health and safety profile because it is 100% free crystalline silica and is in compliance with the Australian Federal Government regulations that prohibit the use of engineered stone from 1 July 2024.

  • Engineered stone or ‘quartzstone’ benchtops contain crystalline silica, which can pose serious health risks when inhaled during processing of the material.

  • When workers cut, crush, drill, polish, saw or grind products that contain crystalline silica, dust particles are generated that are small enough to lodge deep in the lungs and cause serious illness or disease including silicosis.
